Staying in hospital

Ward information

The cardiologists look after inpatients on the Acute Cardiac Unit.

They also provide review of cardiac inpatients in ED/EAU as well as referrals throughout the hospital.

The Cardiac Catheterisation Suite (Angio ward) is part of the Elmstead Day Unit, situated at the back of the hospital.

Ipswich Hospital

 

We cover most aspects of general cardiology. The main exception is that we do not provide services for patients with complex congenital heart disease. These patients are referred to the congenital heart disease service at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital.

General Cardiology clinic

Rapid Access chest pain clinic

This allows you to see a cardiology nurse specialist quickly if you have been to see your GP with angina type pain.

Cardiac revascularisation clinic

For follow-up patients who have been treated by coronary stenting or coronary artery bypass surgery. This clinic is run by cardiology nurse specialists.

Heart failure clinic

We are here to help educate you about your condition and the ways, in which you can control it, so you have a better quality of life.

Pacemaker clinic

This clinic is run by cardiac pacing physiologists for the monitoring of patients who have permanent pacemakers in situ.

Staying in hospital

Ward information

In the Outpatient clinic we perform procedures including:

 

  • ambulatory monitoring
  • echocardiography
  • implantable Cardiac Device Follow Up
  • stress Testing

The Ipswich Heart Centre is a 12-bed day ward and two cardiac catheter theatres. The majority of elective procedures are undertaken as a day case.

Procedures performed in the Heart Centre:

  • Invasive coronary angiography.
  • Pacemaker implantation.
  • DC cardioversion.
  • Advanced echo.
  • Coronary angioplasty and stenting (percutaneous coronary intervention.
  • Implantable loop recorder insertion. Cardiac imaging available at Ipswich Hospital includes:
  • transthoracic echocardiography
  • transoesophageal echocardiography
  • stress echocardiography
  • myocardial perfusion imaging.

Patients who need to stay in hospital are cared for on Claydon Ward.

 

In the community

 

We hold cardiology clinics at:

  • Framfield House, Woodbridge
  • Riverside Clinic, Ipswich

Clacton Hospital and Community Diagnostic Centre

Clinics are held in the Jubilee Unit at Clacton Hospital.

Tests such as echocardiogram, electrocardiogram and Holter monitor are performed in the Community Diagnostic Centre.  The Diagnostic Centre is located at Clacton Hospital, the main entrance is to the left of the main foyer.

Heart conditions service at ESNEFT

In this department we deal with anything to do with your heart:

  • Chest pain.
  • Breathlessness.
  • Palpitations or faints.

 

Some conditions we treat include:

  • heart attacks
  • angina
  • heart failure
  • heart valve disease
  • high blood pressure
  • high cholesterol.

You may be seen by one of our specialist nurses who run clinics for:

  • angina
  • atrial fibrillation
  • heart failure.

They also offer help and rehabilitation to those that have had:

  • heart attacks
  • coronary stents
  • cardiac surgery.

We are able to do some procedures in our catheterisation suites:

  • Fitting pacemakers.
  • DC cardioversion.
  • Coronary angiography (imaging of the coronary arteries).
  • Coronary stenting.

We also travel to Papworth and the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre to treat local patients if you are being treated there.

We work very closely with the cardio-respiratory (heart and lungs) team.
