About governors

Governors meet with people in their local community or staff group to listen to their ideas and opinions and report back at Council of Governors meetings. They discuss major service developments, the Trust's annual report and accounts, and how members are recruited and informed.

Foundation trusts

The Trust became an NHS foundation trust on 1 May 2008 and holds elections for governors every three years. Its 6,763 public members are eligible to vote for, and to stand as, public governors. There are five public constituencies: Colchester (5 posts); Tendring (5); Halstead & Colne Valley (3); Rest of Essex (1) and Suffolk (1).

The Trust's 4,511 staff members, which includes volunteers and is also virtually the entire workforce, are able to vote for staff governors representing the following staff constituencies: Nursing & Midwifery (2 posts), Support Staff (2), Medical & Dental (1) and Allied health professionals/Health care scientists (1).

In addition, the Council of Governors has five stakeholder governors who are nominated by the organisations they represent: Colchester Borough Council, Colchester Garrison, Essex County Council, Tendring District Council and the University of Essex/Anglia Ruskin University.

* A sixth staff governor post representing support staff, was approved at the April 2013 Joint Board meeting.
