Essex County Hospital Transfer

Essex County Hospital

For many years, it has been the Trust's strategy to centralise acute services at Colchester General.

As part of plans to improve services to and facilities for patients, all of the clinical services currently provided at Essex County Hospital are being transferred to other health care sites in Colchester, mainly to Colchester General Hospital and Colchester Primary Care Centre.

Service by service location when services transfer

Breast Services – moved to their new accommodation in the Gainsborough Wing at CGH over the weekend of 7th/8th April. This completes the refurbishment of the ground floor of Gainsborough Wing.

Nuclear Medicine – on Friday 20th April, Nuclear Medicine moved to their new accommodation on the first floor of the new Turner Diagnostic Centre. The first Nuclear Medicine patient will be seen at the new unit on Tuesday 24th April. The building will also provide MRI and PET CT services to our patients on the ground floor.

Oral Surgery – plans are underway to relocate this service to the first floor of the PCC. Discussions between the Trust and Mid Essex Hospitals Services NHS Trust continue, to decide what the new service model will look like. Whatever the outcome there will be an oral surgery provision at the PCC as part of the Colchester spoke of the Essex-wide service.

Radiation Protection – work will soon start to redevelop space in the Old Boiler House at CGH for the Trust’s Radiation Protection Team.

Radiology – x-ray services will relocate from ECH to the PCC later during the year.

Ophthalmology – these services will relocate to the first floor of the PCC in early Autumn.

ENT & Audiology – these services will relocate to the second floor of the PCC in early Autumn.

ECH Heritage Project

The Trust is working in partnership with the University of Essex, with support from the Colchester Medical Society and the Colchester League of Hospital Friends, on a project to help preserve the history of Essex County Hospital.

University of Essex students Deborah Wiltshire, Kyle Cameron-Symes and Amy Powis are working under the supervision of lecturer Dr Alix Green from the Department of History to accurately record materials relating to the hospital’s past. They are also looking to find ways of making this material available to the wider community.

Trust collaboration with Essex County Council

In March 2017, the Trust reached an agreement with Essex County Council to work together on the future redevelopment of Essex County Hospital.

The County Council collaborates with local authorities and public sector organisations in Essex to identify unwanted buildings and land for new homes.

Detailed design work for the Primary Care Centre

There has been a delay to this project meaning the building works are not due to start until autumn 2017. We are currently working with Kier and their design team on agreeing a final cost plan and construction programme for the works.

The architects designing the space for our use have submitted their planning application to the local council so we can build a new lift shaft to improve access to the first and second floors.
