Library Opening Hours
The Library is open 24/7 for all Colchester Hospital staff.
The library is staffed:
Monday – Friday 9:00am – 5:00pm
An NHS Open Athens account gives you access to bibliographic databases such as CINAHL, Embase, Medline, PsycINFO and many electronic journals.
In addition you have access to E-books and much more.
Health Database Advanced Search (HDAS)
The NHS has its' own version of Medline, along with CINAHL, EMBASE, PsycINFO and other databases; where all the online and print journals purchased on behalf of the NHS, at national, regional and local level are available.
Search these databases with your Athens username and password and you will see the full text articles you are entitled to as an NHS staff member.
A comprehensive personal, or group training session taking about an hour, can be arranged during library hours. This can be both within the library or at your site (subject to availability) contact us by phone or email email@example.com
HDAS can be used here (you will need to enter your Athens username and password)
There are Training Guides to the Healthcare databases in pdf format which you can download here.
Please note searching PubMed on the open internet does not link you to the many journals bought for you by the NHS
Current journals are only available electronically and they can be accessed by using your Athens account.
Alternatively go to the home page of www.eel.nhs.uk under "Athens & E-Resources" select "Find a journal" You will need to enter your Athens username and password to find links to all journal titles available to you in full text.
You will also find links to those held in this Library in hard copy giving the years available.
We do not hold current journals in print. The collection of print journals held within Colchester General Hospital Library and shown on www.eel.nhs.uk as above is not available for loan.
However they may be accessed in the library, and copied, with adherence to copyright law.
