Colchester Hospital Medicines Formulary

Welcome to the Medicines Formulary of Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust.

The Medicines Formulary has been produced and developed by cooperative collaboration between primary and secondary care colleagues via the North East Essex Medicines Management Committee. It has been designed as an advisory/guidance tool to support safe and cost-effective prescribing whilst aiming to ensure the optimum use of medicines throughout the locality.

The Medicines Formulary is a constantly evolving and dynamic document and will be updated after each meeting of the Medicines Management Committee to ensure that the formulary is kept up to date and reflective of current practice.

Based on the layout of the British National Formulary, the Medicines Formulary gives a list of those medicines that are approved of use and indicates which products can only be prescribed in restricted circumstances. The included medicines list takes full account of the guidance produced by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and all locally agreed guidelines approved by the Medicines Management Committee.

Published NICE guidance can be found via www.nice.org.uk whilst members of Trust staff can access the local guidelines via the intranet web pages of the Medicines Management Committee.

The Medicines Formulary webpages are managed by Paul Mills (Principal Pharmacist, Clinical Services). He can be contacted via telephone 01206 742101 or via e-mail paul.mills@colchesterhospital.nhs.uk
