Menopause information

In the UK, women reach the menopause at an average age of 51. This has not changed over time. In 1900, the average life expectancy for a woman was 42 but now it is more than 80. This means the menopause is now happening ‘mid-life’ and women can expect to live at least a third of their lives in the post menopause.

The menopause is the final natural menstrual period that a woman has. Once she has not had a period for one year she can be described as post-menopausal. The length of time leading up to the menopause is known as the peri-menopause, this can last for up to eight years.

During the peri-menopause, the hormonal and biological changes that are associated with the menopause begin. As a result of these hormonal changes, many women experience physical and emotional symptoms.
