Pharmacy Support Unit

Who We Are

The PSU provides safe and effective preparation, storage and distribution of pharmaceuticals and medicines to the Colchester Hospitals, NHS care providers and private organisations. We also offer a number of wholesaling and quality assurance services to an even wider range of customers. The entire service is clinically led by a team of experienced professionals with a detailed understanding of pharmacy and pharmacy preparation.

What We Do

We hold a Wholesale Dealers License (WD/12282) with the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) which is essential in order to purchase and distribute our pharmaceutical products to our customers. Every product and service that we provide is covered by our MHRA licenses and our NHSLA certificates.

We manufacture aseptically prepared products in our on-site Grade A isolator environment and Grade D manufacturing environment. These products include chemotherapy and hazardous drugs, radiopharmaceuticals, parenteral nutrition, general injectables and eye drops. Our non-sterile preparative services operation includes over-labelling, re-packing, extemporaneously prepared items, creams and ointments and a variety of other products.

We have a strong in-house quality assurance and quality control service to guarantee the quality of our manufactured products, and to offer additional laboratory services, including medical gas testing, water testing, cleaning validations and environmental monitoring. Visit Our Services to find out more about what we can do for you.

What Our Customers Say About Us

The PSU has developed a 'specials' project with the local Primary Care Commissioning Team (NHS North East Essex) in order to offer patients the choice of having their specially prepared medicines delivered direct from the hospital. The project is going well, and here is what they had to say about it:

"The specials project has begun very well, with consistency and patient safety as the most important feature, and we are looking to expand this across the area. Patients seem happy to be getting their medication from their 'local' Hospital, and the turnaround time is a lot quicker than they would receive from their local Pharmacy in some instances."
