Pharmacy Services

Almost every patient who attends hospital for treatment will receive some form of medication. The pharmacy department ensures the availability of a huge range of medication and is the key source of expertise on medicines within the Trust.

The Pharmacy Service seeks to ensure that the right medicine is provided to the right patient, at the right time, through the provision of a comprehensive, professional advisory and supply service. The service includes advice and assistance in selecting prescribed therapies to maximise clinical and cost-effectiveness, contact with hospital in-patients and out-patients and providing education and training on pharmaceutical matters.

Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians, having undertaken intensive training, have valuable expertise in all aspects of medicines. With medicines usage being the most common health intervention in the NHS, the skills and knowledge of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are an essential and indispensable element of safe and effective healthcare provision. The technical support elements to the pharmacy team offers additional skills in the preparation, mixing, stability and analysis of medicines, and a specific interest in the quality of medicines. Manufacture, procurement, storage, quality assurance, supply and distribution of our pharmaceutical products is co-ordinated through our Pharmacy Support Unit.
