Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU)

The purpose of the SAU is to provide rapid assessment, stabilisation, interventions and first line treatment for surgical referrals from:

SAU aims to deliver the four-hour operational standard already in place in the Emergency Department. The provision of an SAU will support the achievement of this standard through timely treatment, management plans, early review by senior staff and the transfer of patients to the most appropriate clinical pathway.

Opening hours

Monday to Friday 10am to 8pm

Outside of these hours, surgical emergency patients will continue to be admitted via A&E and the Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU).
