Volunteering

Welcome to volunteer services at our NHS Trust and thank you for choosing to make a difference in our community.

We currently have over 200 wonderful volunteers who donate their time and energy to wards and departments all across our site at Colchester General Hospital. Hailing from all walks of life and backgrounds, volunteers support our hard working staff and contribute towards a making genuine, lasting difference in the lives of those with cause to visit the Trust.

What Can I Do?

Here are a few examples of some of the roles we are recruiting for as well as some specific opportunities that we are particularly keen to fill. Our department is continuously expanding and anxious to make the best use of the talent and enthusiasm that is on offer, so don’t be dissuaded if there is not a position that you feel suits you.

Please note that all of our volunteer roles are strictly non-clinical and centred largely on staff support and patient experiences rather than medicine. If you are a student or someone seeking a clinical job-shadowing placement and would like more information then please use the information below:

What Training and Support Will I Be Given?

We will provide you with six NHS training courses that cover vital information such as Health & Safety, Data Protection, Hand Hygiene and Safeguarding.

We will also invite you to attend one of our regular volunteer inductions and training mornings. These feature speakers from multiple departments and are designed to better equip you for the various scenarios you might face as a volunteer. They will also impart vital information on subjects such as Dementia Training and Safeguarding Vulnerable Persons.

Once assigned a placement you will have a local induction a named supervisor to whom you can go with questions and concerns. Our office is always open to our volunteers and we will frequently send out missives concerning future events and training opportunities.

What is the Time Commitment?

Due to the time it takes to process an application we ask that our volunteers to give us a minimum of two hours a week for 6 months. However, this can vary widely depending on the placement and we understand that individual circumstances change. Please be sure to note down your availability whilst applying.

How do I apply?
