Ten reasons to choose our Trust if you're a patient

  1. At Our Best is a programme we started in 2011 to inspire, support and develop all of our staff to consistently deliver the very best patient experience. Make sure you check out the behaviour standards and values that we expect all staff to adhere to. Also, our Trust has maintained its Investors in People standard since 2004. We are committed to ensuring quality services and improving patients' experience by keeping patients at the centre of all that we do.

  2. Patients recommend us and we score highly in the Friends and Family test.

  3. Patient experience. We score very highly on Patient Opinion and on NHS Choices for Essex County Hospital and for Colchester General Hospital

  4. What do others say? Read what is being said about our hospitals.

  5. Patient safety. We were one of the first Trusts to be awarded a certificate by the Patient Safety First campaign in recognition of our work to improve patient safety.

  6. Dignity and respect. Mixed sex accommodation? Not on our wards. We have the necessary facilities, resources and culture to ensure that patients who are admitted to our hospitals will only share the room where they sleep with members of the same sex, and same-sex toilets and bathrooms will be close to their bed area. Sharing with members of the opposite sex will only happen when clinically necessary .

  7. Safety and cleanliness. See our Clean | Safe | Spotless campaign. See how low our infection figures are.

  8. Our top specialists
    • Our laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery Colchester General was one of the first hospitals in the country to carry out laparoscopic procedures (keyhole surgery) routinely in our Iceni Centre which is seen as world-class. Today the unit carries out more advanced keyhole surgery than anywhere else in the UK.

    • Our oncology (cancer) service People from all over north and mid-Essex come to our Essex County Hospital cancer centre for our radiotherapy service, although we are buidling a new £25m centre at Colchester General Hospital, chosen in 2011 as one of two sites in Essex.

    • Our stroke unit According to the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement our stroke unit is in the top 10 performing units in the NHS. A team from the NHS Institute visited the unit in 2006 to learn lessons from Colchester and spread best practice throughout the health service.

  9. Investment. In recent years we have been investing millions of pounds in people, buildings, equipment and computer systems, as shown in our annual reports. Read our plans for the future on our annual plan page.

  10. We're the local specialists Our consultants support the hospital across dozens of specialities from Accident and Emergency to X-ray.
